Are Farmers Becoming "Irrationally Exuberant"?

Every few years an event happens in every neighborhood that can change the farm business dynamics. The event in our neighborhood is a fairly large parcel of land that has been widely advertised for rent. The bids are coming in from farmers 100 miles away in addition to much local interest. The coffee shop is abuzz with speculation about who is bidding and the height of the bids. There seems to be a feeding frenzy sort of attitude that reminds me of events in the late 1970s-early 1980s. I think it is vital that one has an optimistic, adaptive attitude toward the future and changing environments in order to be successful. BUT, I'm beginning to get the gut feeling that we farmers are becoming "irrationally exuberant" in this current cycle. Sooo, the question is: am I just showing my age having been farming for more than four decades? Or is it time to walk while others run?
